David John Victor Courtney - Mr Cricket

13th May 1943 - 25th September 2012
"Dave's association with the cricket industry spanned many years. He started with his own sports shop and later 3D Cricket. This was a very successful mail order company marketing the products through its own catalogue which he designed andwas rightly very proud of. After many successful years running 3D Cricket he sold up and later joined Huck Nets (UK) Ltd as our Sports and Cricket Facility Specialist. Over the last 10 years Dave has brought his own brand of marketing professionalism and enthusiasm to the company that will be sorely missed. I do not believe the industry will ever see a "Mr Cricket" with so much knowledge and enthusiasm as Dave Courtney" Richard Connolly, Managing Director

JULY 2011
Huck Nets brings the beach to Bracknell
Huck Play, the play division of Huck Nets [UK] has recently designed, manufactured, supplied and installed a magnificent new destination playground at Locks Ride Recreation Ground near Bracknell. Located in a remote but beautiful spot on the outskirts of Bracknell in the Parish of Winkfield, the playing field has been transformed from being a mainly male dominated site with its two football pitches and cricket ground, to a facility the whole family can enjoy.
The new playground was championed by Winkfield Parish Council who managed, with the help from Bracknell Forest Council, to secure £150K funding under the Government's PlayBuilder Scheme. Being a remote site it was decided to build a destination park rather than a drop in playground. Following consultation with residents and schools in the area, the idea of a Mediterranean themed play area that would be fun and bring 'a day at the beach' to Bracknell was born.
After going through the strict tender process the contract was finally awarded to Huck Play, one of 14 UK play equipment suppliers to submit a tender. Huck Play's scheme was considered to be the most innovative and the best interpretation of the brief. "Being manufactured mostly of rope and timber, Huck's play equipment range not only fitted perfectly with the theme but also blended naturally into the beautiful scenery and surroundings at Locks Ride." said Councillor David Parkin who led the project.
The new playground at Locks Ride covers approximately 730 square metres. It consists of an inclusive play area, a gym area and a barbecue area, all built around a splash-park. It has been designed by Huck's Playground Design Manager, Tony Lucas, who said: "This has been a very enjoyable project to work on. I have worked very closely with the Working Party throughout to ensure that their ideas were incorporated into the scheme. It has been very rewarding seeing the concept grow from paper to reality. Our equipment and the multiple colour choices were ideally suited to the Mediterranean theme chosen. To give the site its beach feel I was able to place a varied selection of equipment in a large beach area, including swings, slides, climbing frames, water features and even a rope bridge to link natural mounds. I was also able to utilise our hemp sun sails in the barbecue area as well as our hammocks."
The Huck equipment used included: rope bridge, cantilever swings, multi-base swing frame, bespoke climbing frames, trampoline, hammocks, twin cable ways, water and sand tables, spider web, outdoor gym equipment.
As well as designing, supplying and installing all the play equipment, Huck have put down the decking, provided picnic tables and four barbecues, available to hire from the Parish Council, and also undertaken all of the landscaping. This included the planting of a number of amazing trees and shubs including palms, a 100 year old olive tree and a Ginkgo [the oldest known species of tree in the world] to complete the 'Mediterranean Seaside' theme.
At the official opening, attended by over 2000 people, Councillor David Parkin, thanked Huck and the team for helping them so successfully achieve their objectives and said; "We now have a facility that we can all be proud of... and which is already attracting whole families to the recreation ground."

Civil Guests to Bridport enjoy visit to Huck Nets
Huck Nets UK Ltd recently opened their doors to show the Bridport Town Mayor, Cllr Geoffrey Ackerman, and his Civic Guests across Dorset and South Somerset, how Bridport's heritage of rope and nets has moved into the 21st Century.
The Managing Director of Huck Nets, Richard Connolly, welcomed the visitors then described how the net industry in Bridport had developed since traditional rope was made using flax and hemp, and explained why the net industry is still prospering in the town. He introduced the audience to knotless netting which is manufactured by Huck Nets and is growing in popularity as it is stronger and easier to handle than the traditional knotted netting. The guests then went on a tour of the site to watch Huck Nets employees demonstrating a wide variety of netting manufactured at Huck for today's needs.
Said Linda Bullock, who organised the event on behalf of the Bridport District Council: "While Bridport has traditionally supported the armed services - having been commanded to make ropes by night and day for King John's Navy in 1253, and more recently supplying cargo restraints and nets for Chinook helicopters - the visit to Huck enabled guests to see how the industry has evolved. The adaptation of traditional netting techniques and use of synthetic twine has enabled Huck to gain contracts with car manufacturers, many sports organisations including major football clubs, and also contracts with the building industry for safety netting, for pest control and other industrial uses".
The Civic Guest were particularly interested to see examples of Huck's purpose built play equipment and to hear of Huck's involvement with the new Play Area at West Bay. Huck had worked with young people of Bridport and various Agencies including the Town Council to bring their vision to fruition in a new nautical themed Play Area that throughtfully links the area with Bridport's rope and net heritage. After their visit to Huck Nets the Civic Guest proceeded to West Bay to see the Play Area.

@Futsal open more sites with help from Huck Nets
@Futsal Ltd have now opened three @Futsal 5-aside indoor football arenas – Swindon, Cardiff and Birmingham. Birmingham is the most recently opened and is the largest Futsal indoor arena in Europe with 9 indoor pitches and an additional small one for warm-up/practice. @Futsal plan to open two more this year, the first of these being in Manchester.
Futsal is the only form of indoor 5-a- side football officially recognised by FIFA . The game is played between two teams of five players, with each squad comprising of up to 12 players. Substitutes can be made on a ‘rolling’ basis, and as in normal 11 a-side football, playing arena boundaries are marked with lines and not walls or boards. The ball can be kicked above head height with goals being a similar size to hockey goals. Corners can be taken and throw-ins are replaced by kick-ins from touch lines, both of which must be taken within four seconds. The ball is a regulation size 4 ball but with a reduced bounce, encouraging good control and technique.
The @Futsal arenas provides families and players of all ages, levels and genders with state-of-the art playing facilities. The management at each arena runs adult and youth @Futsal [5-a-side] leagues every night of the week, a national education scholarship programme for 16-19 year olds and exciting competitions and tournaments. Each of the Arenas is providing facilities for circa 1000 football players each week!!
Huck Nets manufacture, supply and install the specialist indoor netting systems for @Futsal, this includes not only the provision of floor to ceiling netting but the tracking, the tension wire system, etc.
Said Lee Baker,National Infrastructure Manager, @Futsal
“ When embarking on an ambitious project such as this it is important to find suppliers who are experts in their fields and who can be trusted to deliver what is needed – when needed. Huck Nets are responsible for kitting out our arenas with the specialist indoor netting, a crucial part of each Arena as it is netting that divides the pitches and also protects the spectators… Huck also provide us with football goal nets. The advice, support and service given by Huck Nets is excellent..in fact I cannot remember having one problem with their installation at Birmingham.. !

Huck Play equipment brings new life to derelict play area
Huck Play has recently designed, equipped and installed a new playground into a derelic t play area in the beautiful village of Portesham, located close to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast in West Dorset. The project was the culmination of years of hard fundraising by Portesham's Playground Action Group. The village raised £3000 from local fundraising and donations, and eventually secured funds from "Community Spaces"[Groundwork UK and the Lottery Fund], Dorset County Council and West District Council.
The brief given to Tony Lucas, Huck's Playground Design Manager, was to create a play area that would meet the needs of children from the ages of 3 to 11 years. It had to be suitable for toddlers to use with supervision, cater for heavy use by under 11s and provide social space for older children. His design also had to take into account the preferences expressed by local children during the public consultation. They wanted their play area to include swings, multi-play equipment with slides and net climbers, roundabouts and seats; they also wanted it to be in bold bright colours. Huck's play equipment easily fulfilled these critera.
The Huck Play equipment used included:
Long Douglas Fir Swing Frame with Birds Nest and Toddler Seat; Junior Flat Seat Rope Net Tower with Slide; DDA Roundabout; Stepping Pods and Balance Beam
Installation was undertaken by Huck's installation team and took just over three weeksto complete. The playground was officially opened at the end of September 2010, and as was observed on the day 'The larger boys present were up the rigging in the centre of the playground and claiming victory as they reached the top of the mast within seconds of the gate being opened!!'.

An exciting new play area comes to West Dorset
An innovative new play area has recently opened in West Bay, Bridport, Dorset. It was the brainchild of a group of young teenagers in the area who, as members of a Summer Mentoring Project, had identified the need for a play area in the Town that they could use and feel they belonged in. The initiative was supported by the Bridport Youth Centre and the Bridport Town Council, who together worked tirelessly to obtain the funding to make the Play Area a reality. They engaged Huck Play, the play division of Huck Nets UK based in the town, to work with them to design a play area that would complement the landscape and would, most importantly, meet the teenager's requirements. Huck Play, manufacture, design, supply and install rope and net play equipment. Being manufactured mostly of rope and timber their play equipment is ideally suited to outdoor natural play environments. The end result is a unique play area that reflects its setting on the Jurassic Coast and the areas history of rope making. The purpose built design is based on a "ship" wrecked on the rocks and broken into three pieces, with robust climbing structures and swings. In the words of one 14 year old involved with the project: "It is a play area for everyone from 0-99"!!
Said Huck's Playground Design Manager, Tony Lucas: "This was a very exciting project for us to be involved with and work on. Not only has it given us the opportunity to show case our dynamic product range , and our creative design capability.. . it is also tremendous to be supporting the young people of our community and to have the opportunity of working with them to realise their aspirations. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved together!!"

Devon Malcolm approves Huck Nets!
"My association with Huck Nets began when we selected the company’s high quality knotless netting to use in my Mobile Tunnel Cage and Concertina Net systems. For all cricketers, no matter what age or standard, nets are essential for practice and improvement. I know I could not have taken 128 Test Match wickets without hours and hours of hard work in the nets.
However, not all clubs or schools have the room for fixed nets. My Mobile Tunnel Cage and Concertina Net systems have been designed to make practice more accessible. The Mobile Tunnel Cage can be wheeled to different practice locations depending on weather conditions. The Concertina Net system is a space-saver that allows children to play cricket safely in a shared environment such as a school playground. Both Huck and I hope its use will allow kids to take up cricket where previously there was no space to play.
I am sure that my partnership with Huck Nets will be a long and happy one. Not only does Huck provide the netting for my systems, the Company actively market and supply them. Both Huck and I would be immensely proud if one day soon we produced an England Test player who started his or her cricket in a Devon Malcolm Concertina Net System."

Huck Nets will supply a choice of five sizes of iGOAL, Youth (21ft. x 7ft.), Intermediate (16 x 7), Junior (12 x 6), Home (8 x 5) and Mini (6 x 4). Selection will depend on target age and specific requirements.
iGOAL has recently been tested by a local football team near Huck’s Dorset HQ. Team member Rob Walter said: ‘The iGOAL was quickly inflated and stood up well to one of our typical ‘robust’ practice sessions. We had the added bonus of no fear of collision injury!’

Dorset Civic Leaders enjoy a visit to Huck Nets
Huck Nets at Gore Cross Bridport opened the doors of their factory to Civic Leaders from across Dorset as part of their tour of Bridport as guests of the Bridport Mayor – Geoff Ackerman.
The Managing Director of Huck Nets, Richard Connolly, welcomed the visitors then described how the net industry in Bridport had developed since traditional rope making using flax and hemp and showed them why the net industry is still prospering in the town. He introduced the audience to knotless netting a relatively new technique for making nets and one that is growing in popularity as it is stronger and easier to handle than the traditional knotted netting. It was Huck’s knotless netting that was used throughout the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Another new innovation that impressed the audience was netting made from fibre optics. This is a very impressive material which has won various textile awards and is already being used by designers for shop window displays and stage sets.
The visit finished with a tour of the factory given by Richard Connolly and Huck’s Sales Director, Jon Legg-Bagg. The guests saw sports nets, bird control nets, silage nets and safety nets being made to order and packed by members of the 48 strong workforce.
